How to Take Care of your Eyelash Extensions in Summer

Taking care of eyelash extensions outdoors in summer

As the weather gets warmer and we get out and about more, we naturally want to look our best while enjoying the heat. However, sun, water and sweat are not mascara’s friend and there’s nothing worse than getting panda eyes as you’re soaking up the rays or enjoying time by the barbecue with friends.

Eyelash extensions are a great, low maintenance option for achieving the ‘get up and go’ look with little to no makeup needed. However, it’s important to note that even though you won’t run the risk of having mascara pooling down your face, you still need to take care of your eyelash extensions, so they stay in tip-top shape.

Here are some key tips to maintain your eyelash extensions while outdoors during the warmer months.

wearing sunglasses can help prolong the life of your eyelash extensions

Keep your eyelashes dry for 12 to 24 hours after application

The first 12 to 24 hours after getting your eyelash extensions applied is very important. The glue needs time to dry and hold onto your natural lashes. If the extensions are exposed to water, or any form of liquid, it can weaken the glue bonds and you’ll find them falling off much sooner.

Be careful when applying sunscreen

We need to wear sunscreen to protect our skin from harmful UV rays. Keep in mind that most sunscreens contain oils that can lead to eyelash extension shedding. Avoid applying sunscreen too close to your eye area and wait for it to fully soak into your skin before heading out. This prevents the sunscreen from sweating and causing discomfort to your eye area, which can result in the glue bonds that hold your eyelash extensions loosening.

Clean your lashes

Being outdoors more and using sunscreen can lead to increased dirt and debris collecting on the lashes. You need to clean your eyelashes and eye area both day and night using an oil-free lash shampoo or cleanser. It will also avoid build up from makeup and mites. Don’t forget to regularly brush your eyelash extensions using a spooly brush. This will help the eyelash extensions retain their fan-like shape and will also help keep them clean and dust-free.

Avoid direct heat

It’s almost impossible to avoid the heat on a warm summer day but extreme, direct heat on your lashes can be damaging. The heat will relax the curl and can cause your lashes to become brittle. Also, if you’re warming up next to a toasty campfire or manning the barbecue, make sure to not sit or stand too close to the heat. If you’re out and about, wear sunglasses to shade your eyes from the sun’s rays.

Be careful when swimming

Swimming is a great way to cool off from the summer heat and it’s perfectly fine to swim with your eyelash extensions (except within 12 to 24 hours after they’re first applied). However, it’s important to bear in mind that chlorine and salt water can affect the lash retention time.

If possible, wear swimming goggles to keep them dry. If you prefer not to wear goggles, be sure to rinse your lashes after your swim, pat them dry to remove excess water and brush through them with a spooly brush. Keeping your lashes clean and dry will extend their life.

Protect your lashes from sweat

Sweating in the heat or during exercise is unavoidable but it’s important to note that water and the natural oils from your skin can run into your eyes and loosen the glue bonds. We recommend using a towel or a sweatband when working out. If you’re hitting the sauna or hot yoga, be sure to rinse your lashes with fresh water straight after.

Don’t skip your infill appointments

To keep your lashes looking flawless and voluminous, you need to keep up with your infill appointments every two to three weeks. Your lash artist will fill in any gaps and refresh your current set, so it looks like you’ve not lost a single lash.

Don’t let eyelash extensions maintenance keep you from enjoying summer and outdoor activities. By following these tips, you can prolong the life of your eyelash extensions and look fabulous all summer long.
